Dearest Readers,

Her ladyship, the editor, hopes her readers all had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Her ladyship own plans were of the quiet, contemplative sort -- read more books, plant her new Viburnums -- upgrade her computer to Windows 10. Apart from this last, her weekend was not overmuch inconvenienced by the looming presence of tropic storm Bonnie, unlike her near neighbors, who have spent the last month building an outdoor Highly Illogical Behaviorkitchen in anticipation of the holiday, only to be driven indoors by the sudden but fairly fierce squalls. Her ladyship's Viburnums, at least, appreciated the soaking. Her ladyship's computer, however, did not appreciate Windows 10, which is why this newsletter is a day over due. Restoring an operating system is a tedious business, easily abandoned in favor of reading something more entertaining than a blinking "copying files...." message.

In this case, abandoned in favor of the contents of a box of advanced reader copies sent to her ladyship from a lovely gentleman at Perseus Books publishers, which happened to include Perfume River, the newest novel by Robert Olen Butler, due out in September. Great Southern literature, as it turns out, is an excellent antidote to computer troubles and life's other little annoyances. 9780802125750

Lady Banks' Pick of the Week

Lady Banks' Commonplace Book

Noteworthy poetry and prose from her ladyship's bedside reading stack.

Highly Illogical BehaviorSolomon never needed to leave the house anyway. He had food. He had water. He could see the mountains from his bedroom window, and his parents were so busy all the time that he pretty much got to be sole ruler of th house. Jason and Valerie Reed let it be this way because, eventually, giving in to their son's condition was the only was to make him better. So, by the time he turned sixteen, he hadn't left the house in three years, two months, and one day. He was pale and chronically barefoot and it worked. It was the only thing that ever had.

He did his schoolwork online--usually finishing it before his parents were home every evening, with bed head and pajamas on. If the phone rang, he'd let it go to voice mail. And, on the rare occasion that someone knocked on the door, he would look through the peephole until whoever it was--a Girl Scout, a politician, or maybe a neighbor--would give up and leave. Solomon lived in the only world that would have him. And even though it was quiet and mundane and sometimes lonely, it never got out of control.

Recommended reading from Southern Indie Booksellers

Dancing Lessons For The Advanced In Age (Paperback) by Bohumil HrabalMichael Henry Heim (Translator), Adam Thirlwell (Introduction by) $14.00 ISBN: 9781590173770

Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age"The world is a beautiful place, don't you think? Not because it is, but because I see it that way."

The title is the first thing I noticed about this book, but it definitely wasn't what kept me reading it - the writing itself took care of that. This entire novel is ONE sentence. This is a book meant to be devoured in one sitting - you may not stop to catch your breath. Hrabal is a master and he does something really special here. --O.B., Scuppernong Books, Greenville, NC

The Savage Detectives (Hardcover) by Roberto BolanoNatasha Wimmer (Translator) $27.00 ISBN: 9780374191481

The Savage DetectivesExuberant grandiosity! A poet's belief that the world will be changed by a literary movement! You'll find people you know so well you can practically touch them despite the fact they live in Mexico City in the 1970s. I've not had more fun reading a book in ages! --Brian, Scuppernong Books, Greenville, NC

Julia Reed's SouthJulia Reed's South: Spirited Entertaining and High-Style Fun All Year Long by Julia Reed (Rizzoli)

“Any time Julia Reed publishes a new book is a good excuse for a party. And now, with Julia Reed's South, she even gives readers the blueprint for how to do it. What a gift to us all! This book is filled with wonderful ideas for entertaining, fabulous recipes, gorgeous photographs, a host of characters, and, of course, killer cocktails. No one gets the South like Julia, and no matter where you live you'll find inspiration in these pages to make your next gathering unforgettable.”—Cody Morrison (M), Square Books, Oxford, MS—Cody Morrison (M), Square Books, Oxford, MS

Life Without a RecipeLife Without a Recipe: A Memoir of Food and Family by Diana Abu-Jaber

“Is it any wonder that memoir is the richest genre? The stories we live are far more fanciful, heartbreaking, and ridiculous than the ones we create with our imaginations. We have no control over them. They unfold, in spite of our best efforts, in clumsy, unsettled messes that become our lives. In Life Without a Recipe, Abu-Jaber stops along the way to consider the terrain. She can't control the events, but she controls the words with tight, perfect sentences. There's a beauty and elegance to the prose that elevates this story of the author's search for identity, resulting in a warm and wise delicacy to be savored.” —Terry Nebeker (M), One More Page, Arlington, VA—Terry Nebeker (M), One More Page, Arlington, VA

Versions of UsThe Versions of Us: A Novel by Laura Barnett

“This is a lovely debut that swept me along with the story of two people destined to be together after one chance meeting in college. From there, Bennett presents three different versions of their story, and readers see the next decades played out through the couple's eyes. Each story is different, yet features the same players, and each does not turn out as expected. This is a thoughtful and touching novel about love, expectations, and forgiveness.” —Kelly Estep (E), Carmichael's Bookstore, Louisville, KY—Kelly Estep (E), Carmichael's Bookstore, Louisville, KY

Ask Kate

Ask Kate

Raymie NightingaleThis spring, Kate DiCamillo's new book, Raymie Nightingale, was chosen by Southern Independent Booksellers as their inaugural One Book, One South, Jr pick. For the past month booksellers have been coordinating with teachers and librarians in their communities to read Raymie Nightingale to classes and at storytimes. Then they had kids write down questions they'd like to ask the author. Earlier this month, Kate answered their questions during a Facebook Q&A.

As we all know, kids ask excellent questions, so for the next couple weeks we're going to pass along some of them, along with Kate's answers.

How come Raymie thinks her soul keeps getting bigger and smaller? Is she trying to protect it by making it small? – 5th grade student

Kate: Raymie’s soul expands and shrinks because that is what my soul does.  And yes, Raymie is trying to protect her soul when she makes it small.

It seems like Louisiana lives by making lots of things up. She’s always pretending. And Beverly never pretends anything. And Raymie is in the middle. How can they be friends when they are so different? – 5th grade student

Kate: This is a brilliant assessment of these three characters.  And I think it is because they are so different that they can be such good friends.

There are some moments in the story that are almost magical – especially around animals. Do you think animals are magic for people? – 5th grade student

Kate: Yes.  They are certainly magical for me.

Are you a dog or a cat person? Did you have pets when you were growing up and do you put them in your stories? – 5th grade student

Kate: I am a dog person!  And I grew up with a wonderful standard poodle named Nanette.  I put animals in my stories because I love animals so much.

Do you ever secretly like to go Phhhhtttt at people? – 5th grade student

Kate: Ha!  Sometimes.  But only in my head.  Maybe when I get really old like Mrs. Borkowski, I will say it out loud.

Highly Illogical BehaviorTeen and adult fans of All the Bright PlacesMe and Earl and the Dying Girl, and Everything, Everything will adore this quirky story of coming-of-age, coming out, friendship, love…and agoraphobia.

Sixteen-year-old Solomon is agoraphobic. He hasn’t left the house in three years, which is fine by him.

Ambitious Lisa desperately wants to get into the second-best psychology program for college (she’s being realistic). But how can she prove she deserves a spot there?

Solomon is the answer.

Determined to “fix” Sol, Lisa thrusts herself into his life, introducing him to her charming boyfriend Clark and confiding her fears in him. Soon, all three teens are far closer than they thought they’d be, and when their facades fall down, their friendships threaten to collapse, as well.

A hilarious and heartwarming coming-of-age perfect for readers of Matthew Quick and Rainbow Rowell, HIGHLY ILLOGICAL BEHAVIOR showcases the different ways in which we hide ourselves from the world—and the ways in which love, tragedy, and the need for connection may be the only things to bring us back into the light.

BUY FROM AN INDIE

A Note from John Corey Whaley

I remember my very first tour—when nobody knew who I was and you’d be hard-pressed to find my debut,Where Things Come Back, in most major bookstores. That tour happened because of independent bookstores, because booksellers like you took the time to read and share a weird little story from a teacher in Louisiana.  I was so honored in 2011 to be an Okra Pick for that novel and I’m just as honored now.  Not just because I’m a Southerner.  Or because it’s good press.  But because I know books are sacred to indie booksellers.  They don’t just sit on your shelves as strangers, waiting to be discovered, in most major bookstores. You discover them and you share them—carrying on a literary tradition that helps inform who we are and what we strive to be—freethinkers and independent minds.  I’ve seen it countless times now, an independent bookseller taking the time to help a reader find that perfect book.  This is no easy task.  But it’s how books like mine get into the hands of readers who may need them.  If you follow me on social media, you’ll notice that when I’m promoting one of my books, I include a link to Indiebound as a way to purchase. ‘Shop indie if you can,’ I always write.  But these aren’t empty gestures. Indie bookstores discovered me and, in turn, I got to discover how truly important they really are.

Book & Author Gossip

An  Appalachian tragedy unfolds

Julia Franks is a crafty, sophisticated author. She attended Vassar and Columbia University, but she is not the looking-down kind. She grew up with strong connections to the knobbly Appalachian universe, a fabric she remakes as visionary homespun — an elegant cut, too. Her sympathies are clearly with the struggles of the hardscrabble mountain poor in the years between the advent of the New Deal and World War II.  9781938235214

Red Door Books & Art Opens in Saxapahaw, NC

The Red Door Books & Art opened earlier this month in the historic Sellers Building at 1616 Jordan Drive in Saxapahaw, N.C. The shop, owned by Glenn, Sandy and Orin Shepherd, carries a variety of new and used books, gift items as well as artwork, art prints, pottery and jewelry created by local artists. Once the back room and courtyard areas are complete, the Red Door will offer a range of programs and events. including art classes, live painting, local meeting space, local music, open mic, local comedy and more.

Alabama novelist Randy White Thornton dies

The rising Alabama novelist who went by the literary name of Randy Thornhorn wrote two books that many literary critics praised as among the best Southern gothic novels ever. In August 2015, both his novels made the top 20 in the list of the Oxford American's 100 "Best Southern Novels of All Time." His book "The Kestrel Waters," published in 2014, was ranked No. 17. "Wicked Temper," published in 2012, was ranked No. 19, ahead of Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men" at 20. 9780615967462

Two Pat Conroy biographies in the works

“I told Catherine,” he wrote on his blog, “that if she didn’t include the unexpurgated memories of my friends and enemies, ex-wives and girlfriends, hostile critics and others who have reason to renounce my career and life as a complete failure, her book would be worthless. ... I required her to tell the life story I wasn’t aware I lived or the one I was ashamed of living.”

John Corey Whaley's Highly Illogical Behavior

At a time when young adult literature is actively picking away at the stigma of mental illness, Whaley carves off a healthy chunk with style, sensitivity and humor. Solomon, for his part, is obsessed with "Star Trek: The Next Generation," which has become the lens through which he views the world -- and, as he well knows, he has embarked not on a three-year mission, but on one that could last a lifetime, with endless spinoffs and reboots. Unfortunately for Solomon, the boundaries of his final frontier are the perimeter of his house, the holodeck he's constructed in his garage and may, just maybe, the neutral zone of his backyard.

Whaley's wishlist of top five superpowers

Flashlight Eyes. I just came up with this one right now but, really, it seems like a great superpower.   Want to stay up reading but your spouse doesn’t? Flashlight eyes. Need to read on an airplane when everyone else is sleeping? FLASHLIGHT EYES.

Billy Coffey on the appeal of unlikable characters

Perhaps it is owed to a fundamental flaw in my character or that behind me stretches a long line of desperate and damaged kin, but those are the people to whom I’ve always been drawn. In life, but upon the page especially. Many of my novels are populated by characters who mired in a precarious dance upon the thin line of good and evil, right and wrong. They wobble and skirt and fall forward and back. Just like most. Like me, if I’m honest. 9780718026820

Harrison Scott Key coming to Southern Lit Alliance

"It took many years before I realized I must have baffled him as much as he confused me," Key writes. "What must he have made of me, with my love of baking and books and bow ties? What a riddling abyss I must have seemed to him, when I announced that when I grew up, I desired very much to be a ventriloquist? Mom made sure I got a Bozo the Clown dummy that Christmas, and the only real trick I learned was to create a sense of shame and dread in my father. 9780062351500

Truman Capote's car to be restored

TRUMAN CAPOTE’S CAR DAMAGED IN SAG HARBOR, NY, ACCIDENT Truman Capote’s car is an ongoing symbol of friendship for a New York couple with whom he once spent substantial time. Some friendships have special status, lasting beyond a lifetime. Truman Capote, it seems, enjoyed such a friendship with Myron Clement and Joe Petrocik, a couple that was gifted his prized 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible after Capote’s death. On April 28, Myron Clement, today aged 93, drove the beautiful, cherry red convertible over a curb and through the front plate glass window of the Henry Lehr store in Sag Harbor. Mr. Hampton was taken to the hospital for precautionary evaluation. No onlookers were injured. The front end of the Mustang did sustain some damage, but will be restored to its former glory by the current owners, who considered Capote a close, personal friend

Worth the Wait

Redemption RoadFive years have gone by since his fourth novel, 2011’s “The Iron House,” was published, but “Redemption Road” proves the wait was worth it. While Hart’s previous mysteries were atmospheric tales enhanced by aspects of the Southern novel, “Redemption Road” is fueled by more of a thriller plot with acute attention to its well-sculpted characters. As the title implies, Hart’s novel is about redemption, but also about trust and betrayal, and those emotional roads that most of us never want to travel. 9780312380366
