{You never have to darn your socks.}

In which some things about the past are best left to the past, such as the need to darn one's own socks, someone attempts to break Mr. Joel Chandler Harris out of the briar patch, and Ms. Marjorie Wentworth falls over, but picks herself back up again and gets to work.

Dearest Readers,

About a year ago, on June 17, 2015, a young man walked in to the Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and killed 9 people.

We Are Charleston“I walked out to my driveway and picked up the newspaper and I fell over,” remembers writer Marjory Wentworth of the moment she first saw the headlines. “I fell to the ground. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen down from the weight of something like that. I just fell over and was in the fetal position of my driveway. I just could not believe what had happened.”

This month sees the publication of We Are Charleston: Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel, by Herb Frazier, Bernard Edward Powers, and Marjory Wentworth. Part history, part oral history, the book looks at what happened on that fateful day, then steps back to explore the history of the AME Church, and its role in the community, and Charleston's history of slavery and racism.

In short, it attempts to provide some context to the tragedy, and to answer the questions that everyone was asking: Why did this happen? What happened to this town?

"We can't go back and change anything, but we have to think about how this happened," says Wentworth.

It is a terrible irony that at the moment the country is trying to understand another mass murder, and "We Are Orlando" is the phrase splashed across our profile pictures, scrawled across signs in our windows, and starting to appear on the bumper stickers on our cars.

Indeed, we are Orlando. And we are Charleston.

Lady Banks' Commonplace Book

Noteworthy poetry and prose from her ladyship's bedside reading stack.

A Thousand Miles from NowhereIn Virginia, three days later, Henry Garrett finally saw it all on TV. He stopped at a motel on Route 29 somewhere north of Lynchburg, the dim outline of the Blue Ridge Mountains rising behind the motel's dusty gray-brick walls, and the short round Indian woman behind the counter, her painted fingernails adorned with glitter, took a look at the address Henry had printed on the registration card, pushed back toward him the three crumpled twenty-dollar bills he'd placed on the counter, and said, "You will stay here with our compliments, Mr. Garrett. You will stay as long as you would like to stay. You have lost everything, yes?"

"Just tonight," Henry said. "Tomorrow--" But the woman reached across the counter and touched his arm. Her fingernails, a pale blue beneath the glitter, gently grazed his skin as she took her hand away.

"With our compliments, Mr. Garrett," she said. "Tonight, tomorrow. As long as you would like to be our guest. We cannot do so much, but this we can do. You have lost everything, yes?"

Everything? Henry thought; he considered the word. Had he lost everything?

The ArrivalThe Arrival by Shaun TanShaun Tan (Illustrator)

Without a word, these beautifully detailed and nuanced drawings tell a story of an immigrant trying to establish a better life for his family in a distant country. The visual tone of the book implies a past we may think we recognize, but with symbols and customs unknown to any specific time or place, Tan constructs a land where any of us may imagine the incredible endeavor of being alone in a completely foreign landscape. Well-crafted and keenly empathetic. --Rachel

The Country Between Us by Carolyn Forche

The Country Between Us"It is a small country. There is nothing one man will not do to another."

Those words, from 1979, still resonate. At the time, they relieved me of any residual belief in the 'kindness' of power. This book, and Carolyn Forche, started the 'poetry of witness' movement, but it is the writing that makes the witness matter.

"She is creating poems in which there is no seam between personal and political, lyrical and engaged. And she's doing it magnificently, with intelligence and musicality, with passion and precision." -Denise Levertov
--Brian

A Field Guide To Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit

A Field Guide To Getting Lost"Cut a chrysalis open, and you will find a rotting caterpillar. What you will never find is that mythical creature, half caterpillar, half butterfly... No, the process of transformation consists almost entirely of decay." One of my favorite "desert island" books. Everyone everywhere should read this book and then go thank Rebecca Solnit for giving it to us. --O.B.

A Thousand Miles from NowhereA tragicomic tour de force about one man's redemption through love and art.

"You have lost everything, yes?"

Everything? Henry thought; he considered the word. Had he lost everything?

Fleeing New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina approaches, Henry Garrett is haunted by the ruins of his marriage, a squandered inheritance, and the teaching job he inexplicably quit. He pulls into a small Virginia town after three days on the road, hoping to silence the ceaseless clamor in his head. But this quest for peace and quiet as the only guest at a roadside motel is destroyed when Henry finds himself at the center of a bizarre and violent tragedy. As a result, Henry winds up stranded at the ramshackle motel just outside the small town of Marimore, but it’s there that he is pulled into the lives of those around him: Latangi, the motel’s recently widowed proprietor who seems to have a plan for Henry; Marge, a local secretary who marshals the collective energy of her women’s church group; and the family of an old man, a prisoner, who dies in a desperate effort to provide for his infirm wife.

For his previous novels John Gregory Brown has been lauded for his "compassionate vision of human destiny" as well as his "melodic, haunting and rhythmic prose." With A THOUSAND MILES FROM NOWHERE, he assumes his place in the tradition of such masterful storytellers as Flannery O’Conner and Walker Percy, offering to readers a tragicomic tour de force about the power of art and compassion and one man’s search for faith, love, and redemption.

Book & Author Gossip

We Are Charleston

We are CharlestonMy opinion of the city hasn’t changed. Part of what we kept returning to in the book are these contradictions about the city, starting with the fact that Mother Emanuel is on Calhoun Street (named after slavery supporter John C. Calhoun). The whole city is made up of these contradictions. You can’t hide from it anymore, I guess. We interviewed (AME church Rev.) Joseph Darby and he referred to Charleston as Confederate Disneyland. And you can certainly come to Charleston and do these tours and not understand the African-American part of our history, which in some ways has been left out of the story. We can’t go back and change anything, but we have to think about how this happened.

Chasing the North Star

Chasing the North StarAlthough it is not explicitly marketed as a “young adult” novel, Robert Morgan’s Chasing the North Star works best as one. The protagonist, an escaped slave named Jonah, is 18 years old when he runs away from the Williams Plantation in South Carolina. The other narrator, Angel, is 20 years old. They are a bit old for the YA audience, but their ignorance of the ways of the wider world is quite typically teen age. It would also seem to be a YA book because the really grotesque aspects of slavery are not explored deeply here and the white Southerners that you meet are generally bad in ways other than that they are OK with owning people. There is even an interval in the book during which Jonah and Angel live and work at a house of prostitution, and it seems implied that this is somehow “like slavery.” The pimp of the house is ostensibly more despicable that Williams the plantation owner. It is all a bit queasy making.

Revisiting Uncle Remus

Uncle RemusWithout realizing it, you’ve probably seen or heard of the works of Joel Chandler Harris. Characters like Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear are common throughout popular culture, featured in children's stories, animated films like “The Song of the South,” and theme park rides such as Disney’s Splash Mountain. But these animal friends have a long and sometimes controversial history, one explored in “Breaking Out of the Briar Patch: Joel Chandler Harris in Perspective,” a new exhibit at the Hoole Special Collections library. “We’ve tried to show how [the characters] are still very much in existence, but are very much changed by what they were originally,” said Meagan Morris, a recently graduated student of history who helped put the exhibit together. “It’s really trying to show the change over time, and how we want to go back to addressing where [the characters] came from and the controversies.”

Dimestore

DimestoreYou never have to darn your socks. That was a weekly chore for Grandma but when you have holes in your socks, you go buy new ones. You don’t have to settle for just three channels on TV, either, or just one local grocer, but in the new book “Dimestore” by Lee Smith, you can read about someone who did. Born in an area of the Appalachians that were so steep that “the sun didn’t even hit our yard until about eleven o’clock,” Lee Smith grew up in the shadow of both mountains and dimestore. That was her father’s “Five and Ten Cent Variety Store,” which he’d owned since Smith was a small girl and that he’d operated with the help of family when he was feeling “kindly nervous.” At those times, he stayed in a state mental hospital in another city, far away from home in Grundy, Va., population of about 3,000. Lee remembers those days, but doesn’t dwell on them. When either of her parents was hospitalized for mental health issues, she stayed with family — which nearly described everybody in Grundy.
