“Oh, magic hour, when a child first knows she can read printed words.” ― Betty Smith, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
![]()
Dearest Readers,
Summer was a time her ladyship, the editor, was especially fond of as a child. Not, as might be expected, because school was out and there was nothing to do during the long warm days but play -- this was certainly an attraction, but for every pick up baseball game she played in the street, for every hour spent roller-skating with her best friend (her toes still feel the pinch of the metal grip through her sneakers as she tightened the skate key two turns past comfort), for every hour spent this way she spent three hidden away in some secret corner of the garden or house, reading.
Summer, you see, was the time of school reading lists. And almost the first thing her ladyship did when school was out was take a trip to the library to check out all the books on her list. Then, like young Francie Nolan in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (a personal heroine) who used to retreat to her fire escape with her library books, her ladyship would find herself something to drink, a quiet spot, open the first book in her stack and start reading. And she would keep reading until she was missed by her parents and called in for supper.
So summer and books have always been associated in her ladyship's mind, which explains her fondness and endless curiosity about other people's summer reading lists. July is an especially rewarding month for southern reading lists. On July 1st, southern indie booksellers released their Summer Okra Picks -- thirteen new books that are coming out over the next couple months. Of course, thirteen new books might not last the summer for some of her ladyship's readers. Fortunately, on July 4th -- Independents' Day! -- the same southern indie booksellers announced the winners of the 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize -- nine more fantastic southern books to stuff into your beach bag.

Noteworthy poetry and prose from her ladyship's bedside reading stack.
July 5, ten years ago
Alberta felt every one of her eighty years, felt them deep in the rigid muscles that supported her slender neck. Her Fourth of July party last night was exhausting in a way it hadn’t been in previous years. This morning’s pancake breakfast with her teenage granddaughters was raucous, at least by her standards. She loved the girls, God knew – loved them with a ferocity that surprised her. Still, their exuberance was wearing.
She eased onto the sagging den sofa, solicitous of her aching hip, and kicked off her ecru pumps. Her chihuahua Dollie hopped up beside her, head cocked, waiting for a pinch of bread crust.
“Dollie, you’re my best girl,” she said, giving the cinnamon colored dog a small bite. “Though I don’t think poor Amanda wants to compete.”
The tête-à-tête earlier with her only daughter had been as difficult as she’d imagined, disclosing the long-held secret about her younger son, the family rogue. Alberta could tell that Amanda was shocked.
“At least that shut her up about my so-called dementia,” she told Dollie. Then the doctor’s visit with her older son, the stalwart one, the one she trusted. She’d given him a hard time over the years, she knew. But he’d remained steadfast.
Now all she wanted was to curl up on the end of this worn sofa with her sandwich and potato chips and a glass of Tabitha’s sweet iced tea. Her maid brewed tea better than the maids of anyone in her bridge club. Everyone said so.

Recommended reading from Southern Indie Booksellers
My Sunshine Away by M.O. Walsh
"Revisit your 1980s childhood in this suspenseful tale of teenage obsession and desire set against the searing heat and swampy overgrowth of an idyllic neighborhood in Baton Rouge, La." -- Alissa at Square Books, Oxford, MS 9780425278109
But What If We're Wrong? by Chuck Klosterman
How will rock music be remembered in 500 years? And which artists will we remember? Is the greatest author of the 20th century as yet undiscovered, their works sitting unpublished at the bottom of a dresser drawer? Will today's obvious truths become tomorrow's patent falsehoods? But What If We're Wrong? is the perfect jumping-off point for these mind-bending and sometimes unsettling questions. --Lane at Flyleaf Books, Chapel Hill, NC 9780399184123
The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
Meet Taylor Greer, a plucky Kentucky girl with twang and guts-- the kind of gumption that gets you out of a small town and across the country in a lil ole jalopy. Kingsolver gives us the magic of synchronicity and chance that will make your your heart squeeze with its truth. Filled with downpours, impossible gardens, tractor tires, and friends along the way. A warm book that will leave you smiling. One of my favorites! --Amanda at Flyleaf Books, Chapel Hill, NC 9780062277756
A Thousand Miles from Nowhere by John Gregory Brown
"It's not often that I begin and end a book within hours, but A Thousand Miles from Nowhere became an obsession that I had to finish immediately. Truly spectacular, Henry Garrett's story unfolds despite Hurricane Katrina, not because of it. Fans of Flannery O'Connor and Walker Percy will not be disappointed." -- Rachel at Avid Bookshop, Athens, GA 9780316302807

Okra Picks: The Cantaloupe Thief
|
Too many people are staying silent about a ten--year--old murder case--it's time for reporter Branigan Powers to investigate
Branigan Powers knows a good story when she sees one--and the ten--year--old cold case of wealthy Alberta Grambling Resnick's murder definitely makes the cut. Resnick was stabbed in her home after she let it slip that she was planning to change her will. There are plenty of suspects in the death of the matriarch of the town's founding family, but the killer has never been caught.
Now Branigan must do some serious digging to get her story. She knows the town's homeless community might have seen something; she also knows that the local cops wouldn't have thought of questioning these often--invisible people. There's a big problem, though; as Branigan starts digging, the homeless start dying. When her twin brother, a long--time addict, gets involved, the consequences of her investigation may hit a little too close to home.
Set in the fictional small town of Grambling, Georgia, The Cantaloupe Thief is the first in a new mystery series by Deb Richardson-Moore. The author is herself a former journalist and works extensively with the homeless, lending weight to the portrayal of a believable and engaging whodunnit.

A Brit in the Land of Boiled Peanuts
After the first heavy rain, the plaster in his bedroom ceiling cracks and a sizable leak ensues. Even with two fireplaces, keeping warm with the antiquated heating system is problematic. Outdoors, armadillos root up his vegetable garden nightly. Alligators venture into the yard, poisonous snakes slither from the brush, hordes of mosquitoes and angry wasps pepper the property. 9781476709642
South Towards Home
In her introduction, Margaret Eby, originally from Birmingham, describes the nature of her book. It is “not meant to be an encyclopedia of Southern literature, nor is it a travel guide. It is an odyssey of sorts through a pocket of the South that I grew up in and learned to understand through reading.” 9780393241112
Quail Ridge Books Grand Opening
Raleigh’s nationally celebrated independent bookstore opens in its new location in the Lassiter District of North Hills on July 23-24 with a two-day party, complete with games, prizes and special author events. QRB, recently voted 2016 Best Bookstore in the Triangle by Indy Week readers, will celebrate the grand opening of its new 9,000-square-foot store, just across Lassiter Mill from its temporary “QRB On the Fly” location.
Carrie M. Brown interviews her husband
Carrie M. Brown: Will you tell me again the story that made me fall in love with you?
John Gregory Brown: What story?
CMB: You know. The one about how you figured out you wanted to become a writer? The one about being a teenage thief.
JGB: Ok. But I really don’t think that’s why you fell in love with me. I was 13 and got sent to summer school. There was a Penguin paperback display, and I resented having to be in summer school, so my pathetic adolescent revenge was to steal one of the books. It happened to be John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, which I read—the first grown-up book I’d ever made it through, and I was just stunned by the language, the story, the grand ambition. I decided that’s what I wanted to do. That’s what I wanted to make people feel.
Literary Bookpost changes ownership and name
The Literary Bookpost, at 110 S. Main St., is under new ownership and will soon be under a new name. Wendy Beeker, who has been working at the Literary Bookpost for a year, will both own and run the store. Bill and Cora Greene were operating the store, but Beeker said they were ready to sell it. “Bill and Cora decided they wanted to sell the store and they approached me about buying it,” Beeker said. “We came to a good agreement.” Though most things won’t change at the store, one big change will be the name. Beeker is changing the name to South Main Book Company to reflect a fresh start.
Books Unlimited creates children's store
Suzanne Harouff, who owns Books Unlimited in historic downtown Franklin, North Carolina, is planning a July 1 opening for Unlimited Books for Kids, her new children's store. Books Unlimited’s 300-square-foot sister store will be right next door, set inside the neighboring commercial building located at 70 East Main. Harouff is planning to move all of the children’s books for ages zero to 12 from Books Unlimited’s 250-square-foot children’s area, which resembles a castle, to Unlimited Books for Kids.
